Mark Weiser first proposed Pervasive Computing two decades ago and conferences like PerCom have thrived exploring the space of his ideas in that time. We think it is time to look beyond Mark Weiser’s original vision and explore a new space of wild and crazy—“hot”—ideas!

PerHot was born out of our desire to find and discuss such new and controversial ideas, ideas that change the way we think about Pervasive Computing systems, their implications and impact. We want to find out what lies beyond the topics we discuss at PerCom right now and discover what the community will work on in a couple of years.

To achieve this, we concentrated on creating a workshop that encourages discussions as much as possible. First, we solicited position papers that propose “hot” ideas for Pervasive Computing research. Second, we accepted papers based on a combination of technical content and the likelihood that the papers would generate discussion. Next, we shepherd all presentations given at PerHot to increase the quality of the discussion. Finally, we reserved extra time during the workshop program specifically for discussions.

This first iteration of PerHot contains two sessions in a half day workshop. We start with presentation of the four accepted papers. After a break, we close with a discussion session.

PerHot is the result of the efforts of many people. We thank our program committee for faithfully reviewing and discussing submitted papers. We send our appreciation to the PerCom organizers, especially the workshop chairs, Urs Hengartner and Gregor Schiele, for supporting this iteration of PerHot. Finally, we thank our authors for submitting thought-provoking work.
