A message from SENAmI 2013 Organizers

A smart environment is a digitally augmented physical world where pervasive and non-invasive instrumented objects are perceptive and responsive to the state of the environment and its inhabitants. On top of the smart infrastructure, ambient intelligence (AmI) technologies make it possible to extract knowledge from the environment, learning from it and its users to adapt services and applications for them. Since its inaugural edition in 2008, SENAmI, the International Workshop on Smart Environments and Ambient Intelligence, has become a yearly forum to discuss the evolution of technologies that enable ‘smartization’. The Workshop welcomes interdisciplinary perspectives, thus considering topics from sensing platforms and reasoning to novel concepts of ubiquitous applications and smart interaction.

In this fifth edition, eleven papers have been finally included in the Workshop by the Technical Program Committee, which has selected the contributions on the basis of their quality and relevance. The result is a program that covers three key aspects of the development of Smart Environments. ‘Architectures and middleware for data processing and service delivery in smart environments’ is the topic of the first session, with three papers. The four papers included in the second session present different proposals on ‘Interaction with smart objects and Wireless Sensor Networks’. Finally, the third session explores ‘Personalized applications in Smart Environments’, with four papers.

We would like to thank the members of the SENAmI’s program committee for their professional reviews, kindness to adapt to the Workshop needs and, all in all, unwavering and continued support throughout these years. We would also like to mention and thank the help that we have received from PerCom Workshop Chairs and PerCom Organizers to make this Workshop possible. Obviously, this event would be nothing without authors and attendees, so our closing big thanks goes to them.
